Company Information

Automedics is a privately held company based on San Diego, California. The company was founded in 2009 to develop a platform of medical device and software products for better administration and control of acute care intravenous agents. The company’s initial focus is on products to assist clinicians in administering unfractionated heparin, a widely used IV anticoagulant that is the focus of safety concerns in the acute care setting. The company’s management team consists of proven professionals with the technical and business leadership skills, and track records, to execute on the challenges of improving health care efficiency and patient safety.

Management Team

Rob Hillman

Rob Hillman is founder and Chief Development Officer of Automedics. Previously he co-founded Accumetrics and served as Executive Vice President and President from 1995-1999. He later served in various roles as Chairman, President and CEO of Accumetrics from 2003-2008. During his tenure, he led the management team and investors in the re-acquisition of Accumetrics from Radiometer. Dr. Hillman co-founded Angiosyn Inc. and also was a co-founder and Founding President & CEO of ActivX Biosciences. Prior to that, Dr. Hillman held senior management positions in companies including Gensia Pharmaceuticals, Biotrack and Syva Company. Dr. Hillman holds a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Stanford University, an M.S. in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in Biomedical/Chemical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich. Dr. Hillman was part of the original product development and testing team in the 1990s for the GenESA System and a prototype of the AutoHep System.

Tom Klopack

Tom Klopack is the President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Klopack's background includes 35 years of experience in various strategic and operational roles with leading edge, rapid-growth technology companies, in more than 20 industries. Previously he was the President and CEO of IntelliDOT Corporation, a startup in hospital point-of-care medication delivery information systems. Prior to joining IntelliDOT, Mr. Klopack held management positions in biotechnology as the COO of Aurora Biosciences in San Diego, and most recently as CEO of Aclara Biosciences in Mountain View, CA. Prior to moving to San Diego, he spent nearly two decades in various roles at Raychem Corporation in the Bay area. Mr. Klopack holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

David Hale

David Hale is the Chairman. Mr. Hale is currently chairman and CEO of Hale BioPharma Ventures LLC, a private company focused on the start-up and development of biopharmaceutical companies. Mr. Hale was president and CEO of CancerVax Corporation; a biotechnology company focused on the development of novel biological products for the treatment of cancer, from October 2000 until its merger with Micromet, Inc. in 2006 and now serves as chairman. Mr. Hale has previously led some of San Diego’s premiere biotech companies, including as president and CEO of Hybritech, Inc. before it was acquired by Eli Lilly & Co.; and as chairman, president and CEO of Gensia, Inc., through its merger with SICOR; and as a co-founder and chairman of Viagene, Inc. prior to its acquisition by Chiron Corporation. Mr. Hale also was a founder and currently serves as chairman of the public company, Somaxon Pharmaceuticals and serves as chairman of the public companies, Santarus, Inc., and Metabasis Therapeutics and of the private companies SkinMedica, Inc, Crisi Medical Systems, Neurelis, Inc, and Advantar Laboratories, and is a director of Conatus Pharmaceuticals. He is a co-founder and former chairman of BIOCOM/San Diego, and is a co-founder and currently chairman of the executive committee of CONNECT. Additionally, Mr. Hale serves on the board of the California Healthcare Institute (CHI), the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation (EDC), Rady Children’s Hospital of San Diego, the Biotechnology Industry Organization and the Burnham Institute.

Advisory Board

The Company also has retained a world class scientific advisory board to provide general clinical and clinical trial guidance and oversight.

Dr. Chris Cannon

Dr. Chris Cannon, Associate Professor, Harvard Medical School, a world-renowned cardiologist and clinical trialist at Brigham & Women's Hospital and a senior member of the TIMI Group. Dr Cannon is also Editor in Chief of Cardiosource, the online presence of the American College of Cardiology. In addition to being a frequent lecturer, Dr. Cannon has published more than 500 original articles, reviews, editorials, book chapters and electronic publications in the field of acute coronary syndromes. The Company has worked extensively with Dr. Cannon during the initial published clinical validation of the Company’s decision support software concept. He has committed, going forward, to taking a lead role in the clinical product development of the Company’s decision support software.

Dennis Mungall

Dennis Mungall, PharmD and Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator, Florida Hospital, Heartland Division. Dr. Mungall has over twenty years of developing and applying improved dosing algorithms for anticoagulation in clinical practice including Warfcalc: A computed program for managing warfarin therapy, and Drug Calc: A General Pharmacokinetic and Dynamic Program for managing drug therapy. Dr. Mungall was previously Associate Professor of Pharmacy at Ohio State University. He is the author of over 50 publications in the field.
